THE BOOK THIEF BY MARKUS ZUSAK
A Review by Michaela Laws
I warn you now: this book is very much a heartbreaker story. If you care for characters too much when you read, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak will tear you to pieces. This story is set in Germany in World War II as we follow a foster girl, Liesel Meminger, who lives just outside of Munich. She is a thief that steals for a living, but comes across books and starts to learn how to read and appreciate reading. At the same time, however, Death (who has his own personality) is off retrieving souls during a bomb raid. He wants to understand humanity and, sometimes, he’ll just look to the sky. The story is so vivid and magical that it practically pulls you into it’s pages. It’s a great read, but be prepared to be ripped apart emotionally.
